South Korean teacher admits to stabbing girl to death, police say

A South Korean elementary school teacher admitted stabbing a seven-year-old girl who had been arrested and later died in the hospital, according to a police official on Tuesday ( Feb 11 ).

The female teacher, who is being treated for self-inflicted wounds in doctor, has not yet been arrested, said the official, as officers were still investigating Monday’s stabbing.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok expressed his strong sympathies at a Cabinet meeting over the death of the child and demanded that the education ministry and the government conduct an in-depth investigation into the affair at the Daejeon class.

The woman was a student at the teacher’s workplace, but according to the authorities official, the two had not yet established a private connection.

A representative from the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education said during a press briefing on Tuesday that the child had been found by her mother. A nearby fire department official reported to Reuters on Monday that she had been discovered with stab wounds to her neck and face. She eventually passed away in a hospital.
