South Korean sentenced to 14 months in jail for killing 76 cats

In one of the most horrible animal cruelty cases in recent years, a North Korean man was given a 14-month prison sentence for killing 76 cats.

The man, who is in his 20s, was found guilty last week of breaking South Korea’s animal protection laws, according to the Changwon District Court’s statement on Tuesday ( Apr 23 ). The guy was not identified by the judge.

According to a court case seen by The Associated Press, the man committed cat-killing between December 2022 and September 2023 because he had a profound contempt for the dog and started harboring it after another cat scratched his vehicle.

According to the court order, he had adopted stray animals and adopted some from online stores before strangling some to dying and killing some with scissors. One cat was killed by him crashing it with a vehicle, the court claimed.

Because he frequently committed “incredibly cruel” crimes with care, the judge ruled that the prison sentence was inevitable.

The word was also intended to reflect the man’s regret for his crimes, and it was also made clear that his unnamed mental health status was a factor in his crimes.

The person appealed the decision.

Borami Seo, a chairman of the South Korea department of the Humane Society International, said,” The sentence reflects Asian society’s growing issue for animal welfare and hatred for senseless violence such as this.”

This case of cruelty also highlights the value of passing the Civil Act amendment, which will allow people to be legally recognized as living creatures and strengthen their legal protection, Seo continued.
