South Korean man convicted of dodging draft by binge eating

According to local media reports, a man was found guilty of intentionally gaining weight in an effort to avoid being required to serve in the military in South Korea.

The 26-year-old began binge eating before his physical examination for the review, a judge in the funds, Seoul, said. He was given the weight restriction, which made it possible for him to work for a government agency without engaging in combat.

The defendant received a one-year suspended sentence. A friend who devised a special regimen that doubled his daily food intake got a six-month suspended sentence, the Korea Herald newspaper reports.

All able-bodied men in South Korea over the age of 18 must serve in the army for at least 18 months.

The respondent was evaluated after passing a preliminary physical examination to determine whether or not he was fit for combat service, according to the Asian Herald.

But at the final examination last year, he weighed in at over 102kg ( 225 lbs, 16 stone ), making him heavily obese.

According to the news, the man who advocated binge eating had denied the charge of aiding and abetting and claimed he had not believed his friend did follow suit.
