South Korean airlines temporarily cancel flights to Taiwan: Reports

SEOUL: South Korea’s Korean Air and Asiana Airlines are cancelling flights to Taiwan for one or two days because of Chinese army exercises in the area, local media reported upon Thursday (Aug 4).

Korean Air cancelled flights between Incheon plus Taiwan on Fri and Saturday, whilst Asiana Airlines cancelled Friday’s direct trip to Taiwan and can monitor the situation, news agency News1 as well as other local media reported.

Spokespeople designed for Korean Air and Asiana could not be immediately reached, Reuters reported.

On Thursday, China released military drills within six areas that will ring Taiwan. It comes a day after a visit by US Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island that Beijing regards as its sovereign territory.

China’s Eastern Theatre Order said it experienced completed multiple firings of conventional missiles on waters from the eastern coast of Taiwan on Thurs as part of planned exercises.

The kind of sea and airspace controls have been raised after the firing has been completed, a spokesperson at the Eastern Theater Command said in the statement.
