Songkhla mulling tunnel, bridge options for lake

Songkhla: A project to create an alternative route across Songkhla Lake that connects Muang district and Singha Nakhon district is being investigated by the Department of Rural Roads ( DoRR ).

Speaking to a new appointment of position agencies and locals, Weeradej Cheewapattananuwong, a top design expert from the DoRR, said the viability study is examining two options– a bridge across the lake or a tunnel. The first findings are expected next quarter, he said.

Drivers who travel between Muang and Singha Nakhon currently use the vehicle ferry service provided by the Songkhla provincial administrative organization ( PAO ). Some people have requested the construction of an alternate course, such as a bridge or tunnel, due to the delays and long lines. The new framework might also be a tourist attraction.

More than 40 000 responders want an additional way across Songkhla Lake, according to the results of a working board convened by provincial authorities.

Surasee Sri-in, vice president of the Songkhla PAO, said five ships make 250 visits per day to carry 3, 800 cars, about 1, 000 motorcycles and tricycles, and 20, 000 passengers. A 35 million ringgit loss is made annually for the ferry services.

Asst Prof Chalat Thipakornkiat, an engineering academic from Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, said 57 % of respondents prefer the bridge, 27 % have opted for a tunnel and the rest wants improvements to the ferry service.

He stated that the respondents are concerned about the potential effects of the project on the local fish community’s lives and the atmosphere. But, most agree an alternate route would be great for travel and tourism. This time, a feasibility study may be conducted, followed by surveys and design consultations in 2025 and 2026, with development projects scheduled for 2027 and 2029.
