Six Sri Lankans knifed to death in Canadian capital in rare case of mass murder

OTTAWA: A mother and four young children from Sri Lanka were among the six people who were fatally knifed in Ottawa late on Wednesday ( Mar 6), according to police, rocking a nation where mass killings are uncommon.

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister, declared he was horrified by what he termed a “terrible horror.” The family’s parents also suffered injuries in the assault, and he is now recovering in the hospital.

Febrio De- Zoysa, a 19-year-old female scholar from Sri Lanka, was detained and charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, according to police. De- Zoysa was close to the family and had previously resided in the home, they claimed.

A 35-year-old lady and her children, who were seven, four, two, and two months old, as well as a 40-year-old gentleman who was an acquaintance of the home, were the victims of the murder.

In a televised news conference, Ottawa’s police chief said,” This was a senseless act of violence committed on strictly honest people.” According to the officers, there have never been any previous interactions with the think or the home.

In a social media post, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe described it as “one of the most stunning instances of violence in our city’s story.”

In 2023 and 2022, there were 14 deaths in Ottawa, which had a population of 1 million.

The patients were discovered inside a house in Barrhaven, a district in southwest England. Following crisis names, officers arrived on the scene shortly before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
