Six cyclists to be charged for flouting road cycling rules

SINGAPORE: Six cyclists will be charged in court on Wednesday ( Oct 9 ) for flouting multiple road cycling rules, the police said on Tuesday.

On May 10, the six riders, who range in age from 17 to 20, “allegedly traveled along Scotts Road and Orchard Road in a way that endangered both their own health and that of other street people.”

According to the news release, they were observed riding in between roads and performing stunts because they did not ride along the high left-hand edge of the road.

Two cyclists allegedly rode their bikes without wearing appropriate protective bike helmets, according to the authorities. One rider also rode a vehicle without a brakes, while another was using his cell phone while he was riding.

According to police, all six riders may face charges under the Road Traffic Rules for no riding near the left-hand side of the road.

Five of them will even be subject to fines for failing to conduct themselves, and two may be fined for using a bicycle on the street without a suitable protective helmet.

Also, one will be charged for using a vehicle not equipped with a working clutch, and another will be charged for using a handphone while riding.

If convicted, each offence carries a fine of up to S$ 1, 000 ( US$ 770 ) or a jail term of up to three months, or both. &nbsp,
