Singapore’s young swimmers hope to overcome nerves, clock better times at Paris Olympics

SINGAPORE: Singapore is hoping to make a huge splash in the lake at the future Olympic Games in Paris, even as it fields an all-debutant line-up.

Athletes hoping to reach the Games ‘ semi-finals or even above are aiming for faster days and faster records.

Despite the recent Olympic selection saga, which saw the shock omission of veteran swimmer Quah Ting Wen from the squad, the team left for a training camp in France on Tuesday ( Jul 16 ). &nbsp,

The 31-year-old was not chosen from a list of Singapore players who had qualified for the Olympic qualifying events in February as a member of the children’s 4x100m medley relay team. &nbsp,

The inclusion became last earlier this month when two independent team appeals were turned down. The controversy made headlines, causing Quah to say it was the “hardest loss” of her job.

Gan Ching Hwee, a 20-year-old swimmer, will take Quah’s place to compete in the mix circuit at the forthcoming Games. Gan may also engage in the personal 800m and 1, 500m free events.
