Singapore’s Jessica Tan, Terry Hee book place in Commonwealth Games badminton mixed doubles final

SINGAPORE: Jessica Tan and Terry Hee upset Malaysia’s top seeded pairing of Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing on Sunday (Aug 7) to book their place in the mixed doubles badminton final at Commonwealth Games.

At the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, Tan and Hee beat the Malaysians 25-23, 21-18. The win guarantees them at least a silver medal.

The Singaporean duo, who are 35th in the world, will face England’s Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith in the final on Monday. Ellis and Smith are world number 10.

In the day’s other proceedings, world number 19 Yeo Jia Min stretched India’s PV Sindhu in the women’s singles semi-finals but fell just short.

The Singaporean put up an outstanding battle against world number 7 Sindhu but lost 19-21, 17-21. Yeo will face Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour for bronze on Monday.

Singapore’s world number 87 Jason Teh also fought valiantly against India’s Lakshya Sen and threatened to upset world number 10 in the men’s singles semi-finals. But Sen, who is the tournament’s second seed, proved too strong and edged Teh 21-10, 18-21, 21-16.

The Singaporean will go head to head against either Malaysia Ng Tze Yong or India’s Srikanth Kidambi in the bronze medal match.
