Singaporean filmmaker Nelicia Low wins best director award at film festival in Czech Republic

Starring Taiwanese actors Liu Hsiu-fu ,  Tsao Yu-ning and  Ding Ning, Pierce tells the story of  Jie, a high school fencer, defies their mother’s attempts to conceal their traumatized history by choosing to trust and assist his dangerous older brother after his release from jail.

She started writing Pierce in 2015 to observe her connection with her older brother, who has autism, as per Low, who represented Singapore in fencing at the 2010 Asian Games.

She recently said:” I used to idealise him to be a loving, caring older sibling, but as I grew up, I realised that our whole connection was made up in my head. Accepting that I would not understand if my brother truly reciprocated my love has been a difficult trip for me, and it’s the same path Jie takes in Pierce.

” When we think about unconditional love, we usually think about a parent’s passion for their child. For me, it is the siblings ‘ bond that is more real and raw. “
