Singapore leaders hail strong ties with US ahead of Trump inauguration

SINGAPORE: President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong sent their also wishes to United States  president-elect Donald Trump back of his opening and hailed the powerful ties between the two countries.

In a Facebook post on Monday ( Jan 20 ), Mr Tharman wished Mr Trump the very best as he assumes the US presidency, following his “historic win” in the presidential election last November.

” Singapore and the US have powerful ties, underpinned by strong cooperation in areas like the economy, innovation and security, and with fresh areas such as legal atomic energy and essential and emerging technology being explored. We can and will definitely strengthen this relationship in the years to come,” added Mr Tharman.

In a separate Instagram post on Monday, Mr Wong congratulated Mr Trump and vice president-elect, Mr JD Vance, adding that Singapore looks forward to working closely with the coming US administration to develop existing bonds and observe more opportunities for closer cooperation.

Noting that the  US was one of the first locations to accept Singapore’s democracy in 1965, Mr Wong said that the relationship between both places has “flourished over the ages”.

” Our strong relationships span several critical places- trade and investment, defence and security, civil nuclear technology, and also collaboration in outer space. These shared interests are built on a heavy tank of common respect,” he said.

Both Singapore officials added that US management may be necessary in tackling global issues.

” We are at a crucial moment in the world. US administration will be essential in achieving enduring peace, and success. And so too in resolving the challenges of the global parliament that governments large and small have an interest in,” said Mr Tharman.

Mr Wong added:” The US has much been a pillar of international security, safety and technology. Its management may be crucial in addressing today’s global problems, and will maintain to have an enduring impact on the world. “

This coming presidential term may be Mr Trump’s next, having even served as president from 2017 to 2021.
