SINGAPORE: Following the recent earthquake in Morocco that claimed more than 2, 000 lives, the Singaporean government will contribute US$ 50, 000 ( S$ 68, 200 ) to aid relief efforts.
There are currently no reports of Singaporeans being affected by the earthquake, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs( MFA ) on Sunday( Sep 10 ).
On Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan wrote to Nasser Bourita, his Spanish counterpart, to express his sympathies. & nbsp,
According to Dr. Balakrishnan,” I am profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of life and harm that the disaster has caused in the city of Marrakech and surrounding places.”
” On behalf of the Singaporean state, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families of those who have been impacted by the tragedy.” I hope those who were hurt recover quickly.
” During this trying moment, the citizens of Morocco are in our thoughts and prayers.
Late on Friday, a mountainous region 72 kilometers south of Marrakech experienced an earthquake of 6.8 scale, according to the US Geological Survey. The earthquake is the deadliest to strike the nation in more than 60 years.
The earthquake caused extensive damage and forced residents and tourists to flee to safety in the middle of the night, with solid tremors even felt in Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira.
According to the country’s interior ministry, more than 2, 000 people were hurt, with approximately 1, 400 in important issue. Emergency services and troops are attempting to travel to isolated mountain settlements where victims are also thought to be trapped.
The Singapore Red Cross announced earlier on Sunday that it is pledging US$ 50,000 in charitable assistance and that a fundraising campaign will be launched in the upcoming year.
