Khampun Srisai, a regional actor in visual artists who contributed greatly to Thailand’s silk spinning build, has died at age 91, the Department of Cultural Promotion announced monday.
She passed away peacefully on Sunday at her house in the same building as the Khampun Museum on Si Sa Ket Road in Ubon Ratchathani’s Warin Chamrap city.
According to her family, the royally-sponsored death meeting for the later regional actor is scheduled for 4 p.m. on July 24 at Wat Si Ubon Rattanarak in Muang area.
Born on Jan 5, 1933, in Yasothon territory, which was at the time a region of Ubon Ratchathani, Khampun went to Samakhee Wattana Primary School.
At a very young age, Khampun’s home taught her standard Isan silk weaving methods. She continued to practice and improve until she became a recognized expert in the knitting of fabric in the Northeastern style.
She also developed a number of designs that gained her acclaim.
Her fabric were also used to create the costumes for the historical film King Naresuan the Great, The Legend of King Naresuan.
The National Culture Committee hailed Khampun as a notable artist in the field of visual art in 1994.
She was recognized as a significant Isan performer in the visual arts by Khon Kaen University in 2015. In 2018, she was named a nationwide artist.
