SGH doctors to use AI in making decisions on antibiotic prescription for pneumonia patients

According to Dr. Chlebicki, it’s frequently difficult to predict firmly whether a patient will benefit from antibiotics based solely on scientific evaluation, patient-specific factors, or problem severity. &nbsp,

But, belated antibiotic prescriptions can cause severe complications for those who really need them.

According to him, the latest recommendation is to prescribe antibiotics immediately when suspected of pneumonia without waiting for confirmation because some analyze results may take up to two times.

” We cannot wait that long. The person may become sicker if we wait without beginning care and make a mistake, so the first day or two of pneumonia treatment are extremely important, according to Dr. Chlebicki.

” However, misusing antibiotics contributes to antimicrobial resistance, posing difficulties for potential infection remedy. Before test results are available, a device like AI2D will be very useful for doctors to make informed decisions.

Administering Medicines

The optimistic attitude towards pneumonia treatment means some patients who were first suspected to have the infection but afterward confirmed not to have one, had, in retrospect, have been prescribed antibiotics excessively, &nbsp, Dr Chlebicki noted.

The pilot study found that about 40 % of medications prescribed to patients who were undergoing pneumonia at the start of the time may not have been necessary. &nbsp,

Going forward, the group, which is led by SGH’s Division of Pharmacy, will determine the system’s performance in carefully reducing antibiotic use in a comparative review involving 200 sufferers. &nbsp,

These people may be chosen at random from a list of doctors who might decide whether to prescribe them antibiotics using AI2D. &nbsp,
