Schools shut, tourists asked to leave as eastern India braces for cyclone

As authorities prepared for a serious tectonic storm that is anticipated to strike later this week, tourists were asked to leave the famous seaside city of Puri and schools were told to shut down in some parts of India’s eastern state of Odisha.

The weather office predicts that Cyclone Dana, which is currently over the Bay of Bengal, will become a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour and will likely make landfall late on Thursday ( Oct 24 ), according to the weather office.

Universities in 14 districts may be closed from Wednesday to Friday, and fishermen have been asked not to walk into the water, a senior official from the Special Relief Commissioner’s department, which oversees crisis management, told Reuters.

Tourists and travelers who repeated the coastal town of Puri, house to the popular Jagannath church, have been asked to leave, authorities said, while rescue team were on standby.

Large to really heavy snowfall in Odisha was good in the next three days, the climate office said, and the ensuing storm was destruction houses, roads, crops, and power lines, causing flooding and landslides.

Odisha is vulnerable to cyclones, but has improved crisis preparation over time, reducing harm and fatalities.
