Satay hawker ‘Ah Pui’ reopens stall in Toa Payoh after two-year hiatus

Ah Pui’s larger-than-usual Hainanese-style charcoal-grilled satay boasts a fine meat-to-fat amount — fitting for a barn named ‘Ah Pui Satay’. It’s even a naughty smile to the hawker’s  ‘pui’  ( chubby ) build. However, we must admit that Ah Pui looks a lot less attractive than when we last saw him nearly two years ago. pui  today.

His satay comes with nut sauce topped with freshly-grated fruit.

The former street hawker began his career in the 1980s when he ( illegally ) hawked from a wooden pushcart at Tiong Bahru. After getting fined four days, the once-elusive stalls ended up selling his sought-after slices at a shop called 195 Pearl Hill Cafe in Chinatown in 2021, set up  by a previous ordinary customer.

His satays were so in demand again therefore that  it had a six-month looking list.   But shortly after that, Ah Pui and his servant, Seng ,  who worked at&nbsp as a house assistant; Pearl Hill, left to start their own cafe at Smith Street. Unfortunately, it only ran for about a month before shutting down because there was no longer a queue for the satay.

After his almost two-year split to recuperate, Seng told 8days  that “now, Ah Pui is also rested and ready to make a comeback”.
