Ah Pui’s larger-than-usual Hainanese-style charcoal-grilled satay boasts a fine meat-to-fat amount — fitting for a barn named ‘Ah Pui Satay’. It’s even a naughty smile to the hawker’s ‘pui’ ( chubby ) build. However, we must admit that Ah Pui looks a lot less attractive than when we last saw him nearly two years ago. pui today.
His satay comes with nut sauce topped with freshly-grated fruit.
The former street hawker began his career in the 1980s when he ( illegally ) hawked from a wooden pushcart at Tiong Bahru. After getting fined four days, the once-elusive stalls ended up selling his sought-after slices at a shop called 195 Pearl Hill Cafe in Chinatown in 2021, set up by a previous ordinary customer.
His satays were so in demand again therefore that it had a six-month looking list. But shortly after that, Ah Pui and his servant, Seng , who worked at  as a house assistant; Pearl Hill, left to start their own cafe at Smith Street. Unfortunately, it only ran for about a month before shutting down because there was no longer a queue for the satay.
After his almost two-year split to recuperate, Seng told 8days that “now, Ah Pui is also rested and ready to make a comeback”.
