Following complaints about alleged problem, the Philippine congress voted to remove Vice President Sara Duterte from office.
Duterte, the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, has been accused of misusing millions of dollars in public funds and threatening to have President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr assassinated.
She has denied the allegations and said she was the prey of political scheming.
The shocking action is commonly believed to be an extension of Duterte’s bitter conflict with Marcos, which has heightened tensions throughout the country.
A full of 215 out of 306 members of the House of Representatives voted for prosecution, well above the one-third level needed for the act to go.
The 24-member Senate, which will join as an prosecution court, will now hear the bill.
If found guilty, Duterte faces treatment and dismissal from public company, and would be the first vice-president in Spanish record to be impeached.
She will remain in office until the Senate renders its decision.
