The particular premiere of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is still a year aside, and yet Ryan Gosling has discovered a way to turn each press appearance in to an excuse to wax poetic about his upcoming role as the plastic boy-toy Ken.
In an appearance this week on “The Tonight Display, ” Gosling was willing (“Ken-ergetic, ” maybe) to discuss the never-before-heard tale of how their casting as Tobey maguire was fated.
Because Gosling tells it, some time ago, movie director Gerwig offered Gosling the part of Ken. The script was the “best … [he’d] ever look over, ” he told host Jimmy Fallon, but he desired to take a moment and consider the decision in the clean air.
When he walked into his backyard, he received an indicator from the universe: An otherwise-pristine, shirtless Ken doll, facedown in the mud next to the “squished lemon, ” Gosling said.
The future Ken snapped a photograph of the affecting scene, perhaps a sign from the universe, and texted it to Gerwig.
“I said, ‘I shall be your Ken. For his story must be told, ’” Gosling told Fallon.
And though the movie recently wrapped, Gosling is continuing to name-drop his much loved Mattel character where ever he goes, even if he’s promoting his various other projects, and he defends Tobey maguire fiercely against detractors.
“I was surprised how some people had been kind of clutching their pearls about our Ken, as if these people ever thought about Tobey maguire for a second prior to this! ” Gosling said, pointing a faux-angry, accusatory hand. “They never played with Ken! ”
Then your conversation turned bleak and existential: “Nobody plays with Tobey maguire, man, ” Ryan gosling lamented. “He’s a good accessory, and not actually one of the cool types. ”
This isn’t the very first time Gosling has regarded as the failings of Ken’s seemingly luxurious life. In an interview earlier this month with Entertainment Tonight, Gosling said that life within plastic is much more difficult than the life of the fictional mercenary he plays in Netflix’s “The Gray Man. ”
“Ken’s got necessary, he’s got no job, he’s obtained no car, he’s got no house, ” Gosling mentioned in the earlier interview. “He’s going through some stuff. ”
But the “Barbie” film will be much more fun than Gosling’s devastating descriptions of Ken make it in order to be, he confident Fallon this week.
“Those are not plot information; those are just goal facts about Ken, ” he said. “That’s the Ken lifetime. ”
Until “Barbie” hits theaters within July 2023, we can just hope the particular universe will keep guide Gosling to wedge Ken directly into all his selection interviews for the foreseeable future.
