Russia condemns potential Pelosi visit to Taiwan as 'provocation'

MOSCOW: Moscow on Tuesday (Aug 2) denounced the potential visit by United states of america House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan like a provocation, expressing complete solidarity with best friend China.

“What is connected with this tour along with a possible visit to Taiwan is a pure provocation, ” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters.

He said that the potential check out was leading to a good “increase in tension” in the region and falsely accused Washington of choosing “the path associated with confrontation”.

“We want to emphasise once more that we are unquestionably in solidarity with China, its attitude towards the problem is easy to understand and absolutely validated. ”

Ruskies foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also accused the United States to be provocative over the possible visit.

“Washington is bringing destabilisation to the world. Not really a single resolved discord in recent years, but many provoked ones, ” she stated on social media.

Faced with unprecedented sanctions and international remoteness over its military campaign in pro-Western Ukraine, Russia has sought closer ties with China and expressed solidarity with Beijing over Taiwan.

China considers Taiwan its place and has indicated by means of repeated warnings it would view a trip by Pelosi as being a major provocation.

American officials often make discreet trips to Taiwan to exhibit support, but Pelosi – who is currently on a tour associated with several Asian countries – would be a higher-profile visitor than any within recent history.

Democratic Taiwan lives under constant risk of being seized by China.

Moscow’s assault on Ukraine has heightened concerns that Beijing might similarly follow through on risks to annex the much smaller and outgunned neighbour.
