Rumours of 2nd case in Phuket ‘groundless’

PHUKET: A rumour that another case of monkeypox has been detected on this island province is groundless, provincial health workplace chief Kusak Kukiatkoon said yesterday.

The rumour — that a lady was found to have the viral disease — spread around Phuket on Tuesday. She allegedly had near relations with the Nigerian who was Thailand’s very first confirmed case associated with monkeypox. He afterwards fled the empire and was arrested in Phnom Penh.

Dr Kusak said an additional suspected monkeypox case involves a Thai man aged forty who had no link to the Nigerian.

The particular Thai man went to Thalang Hospital to see a doctor on Tuesday and was later on transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a PCR test for monkeypox. The result will come out within a couple of days, Doctor Kusak said.

Dr Veerasak Lorthongkham, director associated with Vachira Phuket Hospital, said the man has had a fever for 3 days and created blisters over his body.

Doctors believe it is most likely chickenpox, he additional.

“The man has never been within close contact with foreign people or been associated with sex services. He or she is an ordinary family guy, ” Dr Veerasak said.
