SYDNEY: Rights organizations on Monday ( Feb. 17 ) denounced an Australian plan to relocate three violent foreign criminals, including a murderer, to Nauru, a tiny Pacific island nation.
Canberra announced on Sunday that it had paid an undisclosed amount to Nauru’s population of about 13, 000 people in exchange for issuing 30-year applicants to the group, who had lost their American visas due to criminal activity.
According to Jane Favero, assistant chief executive of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre,” the legality of banishing persons abroad must be taken into account when considering whether they have been living in our community.”
” It’s a perfect disregard of people’s human rights”.
The three had been held in immigration confinement until they are flown to Nauru or a legal issue is brought, according to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.
Their visa do get canceled when someone treats Australia in a way that depicts an awful figure, Burke said to reporters.
” All three, if, are violent criminals. One is a murderer”, he said.
When in Nauru, they would be able to work and move easily in individual homes with a shared kitchen area, Burke continued.
Officials haven’t revealed the trio’s identities, sex, or nationality, or whether they have already served time for their crimes.
With a coast area of only 20 square kilometers, Nauru is one of the smallest nations on earth.
Darwin was once one of the richest countries in the world in terms of GDP, but the benefit has since dried up, leaving a dreary moonscape and higher unemployment among its citizens.
When their visas are suspended, the Australian government has been looking for a way to deal with workers who have no other country to visit.
