Rescuers dig for survivors after huge quake hits Myanmar, Thailand

Major quakes are incredibly rare in Bangkok, and Friday’s numbness sent customers and employees rushing into the city in alarm across the city.

While there was no common death, the shaking brought some extraordinary images of top floating lakes sloshing their material down the side of many of the city’s towering apartment blocks and accommodations.

Also hospitals were evacuated, with one person delivering her baby outside after being moved from a medical building. A doctor also continued to operate on a person after evacuating, completing the activity inside, a official told AFP.

RARE JUNTA PLEA FOR HELP

But the worst of the injury was in Myanmar, where four years of civil war sparked by a military revolt have ravaged the medical and emergency response systems.

Junta key Min Aung Hlaing issued an extremely unique appeal for foreign support, indicating the intensity of the calamity. Previous military regimes have shunned foreign assistance even after major natural disasters.

The country declared a state of emergency across the six worst-affected regions after the quake, and at one major hospital in the capital, Naypyidaw, medics were forced to treat the wounded in the open air.
