Ratan Tata is credited with making it a global superpower since he assumed office as party chairman in 1991.
During his 20-year career, the company made some high-profile acquisitions, including the acquisition of Anglo-Dutch chipmaker Corus, UK-based vehicle brands Jaguar and Land Rover, and Tetley, the country’s second-largest tea company.
Tata was a 1937 child of a conventional Parsi home. At Cornell University in the US, he studied architectural engineering and architecture.
He began working as an assistant for Tata Industries, the producer of the group, in 1962, and spent six months receiving instruction at a factory in Jamshedpur.
He then worked for National Radio and Electronics ( Nelco ), Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Tata Iron and Steel Company ( now Tata Steel ).
In 1991, JRD Tata, who had led the group for over half a century, appointed Ratan Tata as his son. ” He]JRD Tata ] was my greatest mentor… he was like a father and a brother to me- and not enough has been said about that”, Tata later told an interviewer.
In 2008, the American government awarded him the Padma Vibhushan, the region’s second-highest human dignity.
Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, praised Tata as a “visionary company head, a compassionate spirit, and an amazing human being.”
