The main association of dining places in India says it will continue to levy service charge on bills despite the government order banning it.
On Monday, the consumer protection authority said dining places could no longer include service charge automatically.
The order emerged after an increase in complaints from clients being forced to pay the particular charge.
But the Nationwide Restaurant Association associated with India (NRAI) looked after the practice, stating it was not “illegal”.
In a declaration released on Wednesday, the NRAI – which represents 500, 000 dining places across India — said that the guidelines were creating “unnecessary confusion” among the consumers together allegedly led to the “disruption in smooth business operations associated with restaurants”.
A spokesperson from the association told the BBC the rules were simply “guidelines”, which intended that they weren’t mandatory to follow.
The particular NRAI’s stance provides set the phase for a confrontation between government and cafe owners.

Under the new suggestions announced on Mon, restaurants were banned from collecting tips from customers “under any other name” or even “deny service or entry to clients who refuse to pay a tip”.
