Pro-China PM retains his seat in Solomon Islands election

INFLUENCE Issues

Prior to the election commission’s report, local governor Martin Fini, who oversaw the island’s swift growth of Chinese interests, had lost his reelection bid.

As Beijing’s control spread from the rest of the sprawling island to Australia’s north, Malaita, a province that had for years, refused to accept foreign aid or investment.

That changed when Fini was installed as the country’s leading in 2023, replacing the common Daniel Suidani.

Fini just signed a memorandum of understanding with Jiangsu province in China, but his refusal to keep his chair makes it uncertain.

Beijing’s consulate in the Solomon Islands has praised Fini’s “firm help” of China, promising to lay his state with better streets and provide it with better online.
