Princess Sirindhorn hails Prince Mahidol Award winners

Her Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, has praised the two Prince Mahidol Award finalists for their humanitarian efforts.

The lady presided over the 2024 Prince Mahidol Award Presentation Festival on Thursday in the Chakri Throne Hall of Grand Palace as His Majesty the King’s agent. She offered a warm, welcoming talk to the two honorees, Professor Tony Hunter and Professor Jonathan P Shepherd.

Prof Hunter — a British-American researcher — won the award in the field of healthcare. He serves as an adjunct professor at the University of California in the United States and a teacher of physiology at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

His notable exploration accomplishments include the identification of tyrosine kinase enzymes and the activation process. The use of these findings has made a significant contribution to the advancement of cancer research and treatment widespread.

The award was presented to Prof. Shepherd in the field of public health. He is the Director of the Institute for Crime, Security, and Justice Innovation at Cardiff University in the UK and an Emeritus Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

His most notable accomplishment was the creation and application of the” Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention,” which can help prevent, reduce, or mitigate the harm brought on by violent acts. The concept is acknowledged as a crucial tool for reducing group violence. It has considerably helped to decrease loss of life and property, improved quality of life in different areas, and gained popularity worldwide.

The exceptional work done by both laureates has resulted in significant advancements in the development of public health policies to tackle issues faced by different nations.
