Power cuts to Myanmar stifle border market activity

KANCHANABURI- Due to a power shortage that affects visitors from Myanmar, the fortnightly outside market along the Thai-Myanmar border is in need of some relief.

The Three Pagodas Friday marketplace in the Sangkhla Buri district, which is usually filled with Payathonzu residents from Mon State, was silent on Friday as power outages slowed daily life.

A Payathonzu female described her family’s difficulties as a result of insufficient energy for things like computers, TVs, and mobile telephones.

The price of coal even rose to 350 baht per pouch from 200 ringgit, while oil shortages may be felt in the city, added the person, who requested to remain anonymous.

Thailand has been limiting supply of electricity, online, and fuel to Myanmar since Wednesday in one of five locations in Payathonzu in an effort to pressure Scam Operation Centers there.

The Irrawaddy reported on Thursday that the need for gasoline has increased in Myawaddy and Tachileik, with some gas stations being forced to close because of a shortage of supply from Thailand.
