Police warn of WhatsApp account takeover in Facebook job scam

SINGAPORE: On Tuesday ( Apr 30 ), the police issued a warning about a new scam variant where victims ‘ WhatsApp accounts were compromised after clicking fake job listings on Facebook.

According to the news release, “victims did come across appealing job ads on Facebook and call the WhatsApp phone number provided.” &nbsp,

Police added that the victims would then be instructed to download an Android Package Kit ( APK) file via WhatsApp” for the purpose of obtaining their personal details.”

The APK document, according to the police, contains malware that may help the scammers to collect data from their mobile phones, “unknown to the sufferers.”

After the patients had downloaded and installed the malware, they may experience a phone camera shutting down or loss of use of their mobile devices.

The subjects would later learn that they were unable to get their WhatsApp accounts once they had regained control of their devices.

In some cases, their WhatsApp app was deleted from their cellular phones, said authorities.

When their connections alerted them to messages apparently from the subjects asking for money, the victims later realized that their WhatsApp accounts were compromised.
