SINGAPORE:  , The police warned on Tuesday ( Sep 17 ) of a phishing scam variant involving the impersonation of the Land Transport Authority’s ( LTA ) OneMotoring site.
Emails, apparently from OneMotoring, would tell victims that their vehicles ‘ street taxes or road licence had been expiring.
Since September 2024, at least eight cases of this scam variant have been reported, with total loss of at least S$ 28, 000 ( US$ 21, 600 ), the police said in a news release.
According to police, the scammers would cover up a destructive URL by hiding it behind legitimate-looking hyperlinks in order to connagle potential victims into believing they were a secure link.
After clicking on the URL, victims may be redirected to a , a hacking payment website posing as OneMotoring.
They would then be prompted to code in their car registration figures, personal information, and credit or debit card information.
Patients only become aware of their own fraud after they discover illegal transactions made with their credit or debit cards, according to the police.
