Difficulty farmers began marching from Punjab state along a major highway to Delhi on Friday ( Dec. 6 ) to demand better prices for their crops. Hundreds of Indian police used tear gas and pepper spray against them.
The confrontation took place just over 200km north of the capital as about 100 farmers, most from the northern breadbasket state, attempted to resume their ‘ Delhi Chalo ‘ ( Let’s go to Delhi ) march, blocked since February.
Farmers discovered security forces waiting behind iron group power obstacles after breaking one part of police walls. There were no immediate accounts of injury.
Before the march began, farmers ‘ head Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that it would proceed as far as safety makes permitted.
” We will be only around 100 people so it is not like we can split police walls”, Pandher said.
The farmers demand constitutional guarantees for more state funding for crops and a debt-freeze, and the government has fulfill its commitment to increase their incomes.
Since February when officers halted their march, they have been camping at Shambhu on Punjab’s borders with neighboring Haryana position.
