In six months, the first step of Phuket’s metro project will complete, with construction expected to begin in 2028 and the service expected to begin in 2031.

On Sunday, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit reported on the status of a study examining the 41. 7-kilometer metro system that connects the Ha Yeak Chalong crossing with Phuket International Airport.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority ( MRTA ) would spend six more months, according to Mr. Suriya, to finish the study and turn in the report by June 2026.

From July 2026 to February 2027, it would then be made and presented to the Transport Ministry, State Enterprise Policy Office, the Public-Private Partnership ( PPP ) committee, and the cabinet, respectively.

The work is expected to become contested between March 2027 and August 2028.

According to Mr. Suriya, construction is anticipated to begin in September 2028, and the train will begin operating in December 2031.

Phuket officials plan to expand Highway Road No 402 and 4027 to reduce traffic gridlock during construction. Along the fringes of Phuket City, underpasses to reduce through five crossings on Highway 402 have also been created to reduce traffic congestion.

Five manhole tunnels, with span ranging from 1.10km to 3.25km, may be constructed near Muang Thalang School, at Mut Dok Khao crossing, through Thalang area downtown, near the Srisunthon municipality office and at Ko Kaeo- Bang Khu intersection.

He added that the state also suggested a plan that would allow locals and residents to set their own tram service fare rates, both at the same time.
