Phuket hosts forum on sustainable island tourism

As climate-related issues become more difficult, the governor claims that strengthening local communities is important.

Phuket government Sophon Suwannarat stated on Wednesday that responsible tourism contributes greatly to strengthening regional areas, especially in the wake of climate-induced emergencies like floods and storms.

He made the comment at the resort’s Pullman Phuket Karon Beach Resort’s 25th Inter-Islands Tourism Policy ( Itop ) Forum’s opening ceremony, which is taking place until Friday.

To examine the outlook of hospitality, sustainability issues, and strategies to improve climate resilience, more than 150 world leaders and policymakers are gathering.

Mr. Sophon emphasized the need for concerted efforts to address climate issues through green hospitality in his opening remarks. Additionally, he expressed his sympathies to the victims and their families who have been the victims of recent tragedies in different nations.

The need for better strategies for preventing disasters was highlighted by a flood in Phuket on August 23, which resulted in 13 fatalities. &nbsp,

This month’s Itop meet addresses issues including the impact of climate change on tourism, alternative finance and wildlife protection.

Former minister of tourism and sports, Weerasak Kowsurat, made a statement about the negative impact of climate change on tourism, while representatives from the World Bank and the UN Development Programme discussed how green finance and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) can contribute to global sustainability.

Participants are even engaging in engaging sessions, including a workshop focusing on modern solutions for water asset management, waste management, effective use of energy, and sustainable tourism awareness.

The region’s Old Town, where a coal neutrality initiative is being implemented, will be shown on the sustainability initiatives that Phuket is undertaking on Thursday, along with visits to local communities that promote social and economic preservation.

Phuket has also been chosen to host the 2025 International Exhibition of Contemporary Art, which was organized by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture and administered by the Ministry of Culture.

The celebration, from November 205 until April 2026, will be based on the topic of “Eternity” to explore the lasting relationship between humans and nature.

The Itop Forum was established in 1997 as a platform for beach city and regional governments to collaborate on the shared purpose of sharing information among 13 part regions in order to solve particular issues beach destinations face.
