Tourism authorities in Thailand are pleading with the government to address the water shortage issue, which is making resort operators ‘ costs more expensive as a result of the increase in visitors.
Thanet Tantipiriyakit, chairman of the Phuket Tourist Association, urged the government on Wednesday , to find a lasting solution as the area state struggles from water scarcity every year. He claimed that the three major dams, Bang Wad, Klong Kata, and Bang Neow Dum, have 20 % below their full potential.
Mr. Thanet claimed that the government is also failing to address the water issue despite the growing profit that the country’s tourism generates annually. Because hoteliers are required to purchase waters, this harms the hospitality industry. Because they cannot command customers more according to sales standards, they are responsible for paying for the costs.
” Phuket is the country’s premier tourist place. According to Mr. Thanet,” we are supposed to include a better water supply system.”
Water volumes at Bang Wad Reservoir remained at 1.17 billion cubic meters ( m3 ), which is 16.8 % of the overall capacity of 10.2 billion m3, according to Sukrid Klinson, manager of the Phuket branch of the Provincial Waterworks Authority ( PWA ).
The Bang Neow Dum reservoir’s water source is adequate for 100 times of usage, compared to the Klong Kata reservoir’s water supply, which is only capable of supplying it for 95 days.
As it tries to safe 1.4 million m3, the state is in talks with secret water suppliers. Negotiations are underway to secure 960, 000 m³.
Due to the high demand for waters, Mr. Sukrid said, business operations in high-demand places like Ao Yon and some elements of Pa Tong are having a difficult time.
The Bang Wad Reservoir’s water level is currently” thoroughly low,” according to Sophon Thongsai, brain of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office. The PWA may use liquid from private sources as a stop-gap measure unless there is considerable rainfall soon, he said.
The island may experience precipitation sooner than expected, according to the Southern Meteorological Center ( West Coast ).
More rain is expected in the second month of May, and storms are expected, it said.
According to Mr. Sophon, free water supplies for drought-stricken areas and areas in need are being provided by the PWA on ask through local administrative organizations.
