Philippines’ Duterte will not cooperate with ICC drug war probe: lawyer

MANILA: Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is not going to cooperate with the Worldwide Criminal Court’s (ICC) probe into the drug war, his lawyer said Thursday (Aug 11), insisting the tribunal does not have legal system in the country.

ICC judges sanctioned on Wednesday the full-blown investigation directly into Duterte’s anti-narcotics strategy – that legal rights group estimate offers killed tens of thousands of individuals – saying it resembled an illegitimate and systematic assault on civilians.

Duterte “will not really cooperate since to begin with, the Philippines leaves the Rome law, so the ICC no more has jurisdiction on the country, ” main presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo told local radio DZBB.

“The government will never let in any ICC member to collect information and evidence here in the Philippines, they will be barred entry. ”

Duterte has repeatedly attacked the world’s only permanent war crimes courtroom, calling it “bullshit” and vowing not to cooperate with its übung.

The firebrand leader drew international censure when he or she pulled the Philippines from the court after it launched a preliminary investigation into their drugs crackdown.
