The Senate president said on Thursday ( Feb. 6 ) that the impeachment trial of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte will likely take place following the midterm elections in May and that a whole new group of lawmakers will likely decide the matter.
Whether or not the trial moves forth in a particular session, when the present Senate reconvenes on Jun 2– or perhaps afterwards– is now up to the country’s 24 sitting senators, Francis Escudero told a press briefing, without offering a timeline for the decision.
Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on Wednesday for “violation of the law, betrayal of public trust, bone and fraud, and other great crimes”.
She may be removed from the vice president and permanently barred from public office if found guilty.
Her Senate test, yet,” will likely expand into the 20th Congress. That’s almost a sure thing today”, Escudero told reporters Thursday.
The launch time” will depend on the principles we approve”, he said. However, I believe the prosecution must take place while the Senate is in session. There is no independent life for the prosecution court.
He continued to point out that the test may be moved over the complete collection by the incoming class even if it begins on the view of the latest senators.
Senators would have to concede to that in a ballot, but President Ferdinand Marcos, who was formerly hostile toward the decision to impeach, may also officially call for a special session.
Wednesday’s prosecution vote, which drew senate from 215 of the brain’s 306 people, spelt out complaints including financial fraud, an assassination plot against Marcos, and ties to “drug battle” murders in the southeastern Philippines ‘ Davao.
