Philippine children back in school as COVID-19 pandemic restrictions ease

MACABEBE, Philippines: Millions of Filipino students returned to classrooms for the first time in more than two years upon Monday (Aug 22), after the country lifted most remaining COVID-19 curbs to try and invert learning losses.

Students, just about all wearing face masks, queued to enter their classrooms and attended flag-raising events in their schoolyards across the country as the government stages out remote studying.

“For 2 yrs, we longed intended for face-to-face classes, therefore even if there’s an overflow, we will continue the lessons, ” stated school teacher Mylene Ambrocio, 37, as she stood in ankle-deep water in a classroom in Pampanga province north of the capital. “I was happy to see the children face-to-face. ”

Precautions such as temperatures checks, mandatory masks and limits to the number of students for each classroom remain in place.

The country’s school closures because of the pandemic were among the longest in the world, using their reopening delayed simply by slow vaccine roll-outs and elections recording.
