Oil spill may trigger 'coral abortions'

The ruptured offshore pipeline of Thai Oil in Chon Buri, according to marine experts at the Aquatic Resources Research Institute( Arri ) of Chulalongkorn University, could have a catastrophic effect on coral and have other long-term effects.

According to research conducted by Prof. Suchana Chavanich, Arri’s deputy director, oil pollution, also known as the” abortion effect ,” can prevent coral from producing new reproductive cells as well as harm its existing ones.

She claimed that although the marine environment is return, coral that has been harmed may not do so in its normal state.

According to her,” close monitoring is advised to observe the long-term effects of oil leaks on marine plants and animals, which requires developed searching technology.”

According to Arri producer Prof. Voranop Viyakarn, Chulalongkorn University researchers have started gathering samples from the oil-polluted area.

To determine the effects on marine animals, researchers will also start a viral study.

Similar incidents occurred in Rayong last January and this July, and the oil spill in Chon Buri on Sunday evening followed.

Although a thin layer of oil has been discovered close to the pipeline, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources( DMCR ) claimed that the coral does not exhibit any signs of petroleum pollution.

According to Apichai Ekvanakun, assistant director-general of DMCR, underground robots have been used to inspect the reef along Tai Ta Muen Island, Khang Khao Island and Si Chang Island as well as the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center in the Eastern Upper Gulf of Thailand and the Pollution Control Department at the locations of the crude flow.

According to Mr. Apichai, the survey results revealed a thin layer of oil surrounding the network close to Khang Khao Island, but no oil was discovered on the north islands.
