North Korean defects to South across maritime border: Report

“UNHAPPY WITH THE NORTH’S SYSTEM”

The North Korean crossed the “neutral area of the Han River waterway located north of the inter-Korean area border” and therefore arrived at South Korea’s Gyodong isle, Yonhap reported Thursday, citing unidentified military sources.

According to the Yonhap statement, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik stated to a parliamentary commission that an exploration was being conducted by the “relevant government.”

The Yellow Sea defected to South Korea for the first time in 15 months, making this affair unique.

A community of nine escaped North America in a wooden vessel in May 2023.

According to experts, defectors who reside in the remote North have good experienced harsh living conditions, including food shortages and limited response to natural disasters.

According to Cheong Seong-chang, chairman of the Korean island strategy at Sejong Institute,” North Korea has just experienced extreme flood damage and has caused a lot of harm in other areas, including parts of the city.”

” It’s possible that those who were unsatisfied with the North Korean system fabricated their defections using internal uncertainty and confusion.”

Later in July, heavy rainstorms hit the military’s northern regions, with up to 1,500 possible fatalities reported by South Korean media.

Defections are viewed as serious crimes in Pyongyang, which is believed to impose harsh sanctions on wrongdoers, their people, and even individuals who are directly connected to the event.

This year, South Korea has resumed advertising broadcasts along the frontier, suspended a tension-relieving military offer, and resumed live-fire drills close to the border as a response to the North’s increased weapons screening and trash-carrying globe bombardments.
