North Korea fires artillery shells, evacuation order issued for South Korea island

After North Korea fired about 200 artillery shells off its west coast, Seoul’s defense ministry announced on Friday ( Jan 5 ) that South Korea had ordered civilians on Yeonpyeong Island to leave.

A defense ministry official said at a briefing that North Korea ( near ) Yeonpyeong Island fired about 200 shots, and locals there had been asked to evacuate, according to AFP.

According to the official, the army informed the village that North Korean soldiers were firing at sea in response to” a condition” near the border.

There has been no deterioration reported. The army added that the shells landed north of the North Limit Line, which serves as the de facto sea border between the two Koreas.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the evacuation order was issued in response to what appeared to be indicators of a military offense by North Korea.

After the incident removal order was given at 12.02 pm and 12.30 pm native day, Yonhap said that residents on the eastern border of the island were instructed to move to homes. &nbsp,

In one of the bloodiest strikes on Yeonpyeong Island since the Korean War ended in 1953, North Korean artillery fired dozens of times on the island in 2010. Four people were killed, including two residents.

At the time, North Korea claimed that North Korean live-fire training that dropped shell into its territorial waters had provoked the attack.
