After some floods on Monday made the main road into the town inaccessible, leaving them stranded, more than 400 people of a town on a hill in Mae Hong Son’s Khun Yuam area on Tuesday called for urgent assistance while awaiting evacuation.
None of these people were hurt in the floods that followed two days of heavy rainfall, according to Phachat Chomchopdi, a tenant who contacted nearby officials on Tuesday for assistance. They were in urgent need of food and drinking water.
Mobile phone alerts went useless when Mae Ko Pi, the town, was hit by the floods, which damaged a number of homes and the island’s class from Monday to Tuesday, he said.
Some villagers, including him, were therefore forced to walk the local hill to intercept wireless signals so they could call people and request assistance, he said.
Around 40 individuals reportedly fled the nearby school on the other hill before a landslide struck the building, he claimed. He added that these individuals were starving and patiently awaiting their parents ‘ arrival to find and save them at the top of the hill, where they sought shelter.
According to the same peasant, the same day it continued to rain in the village, leading to more disaster incidents in the town. Some people became alarmed and called for urgent assistance from local rescuers and soldiers to take them to a safe place.
The northwestern territory has been experiencing heavy rains since Sunday, which continued on and off until Tuesday, according to Mae Hong Son government Chuchip Phongchai, who reported the heavy rainfall to have caused several flash floods and landslides in four towns: Khun Yuam, Pang Ma Pha, Muang Mae Hong Son, and Mae La Noi.
At least 11, 436 people needed support transporting, he said, adding officials were speeding up attempts to reach out to the impacted individuals in all these areas.
In some neighboring counties, including Chiang Rai, which on Tuesday warned its citizens about potential additional flooding and floods, a less intense natural disaster scenario was also reported.
The North and Northeast are expected to experience significant rain in the upcoming days, according to the meteorological department’s statement on Tuesday.
Additionally, it cautioned that the lower North and the westernmost provinces are expected to experience more flash floods as a result.
