BEIJING: Authorities in northern China warned heavy rains could bring floods and landslides on Wednesday ( Jul 24 ), issuing the country’s second-highest flood response.
China is experiencing a summer of severe weather, with heavy storms coming from the east and the north as well as a heatwave that has affected much of the north.
And on Wednesday, Beijing’s town officials triggered the second-highest disaster protection response following days of scorching heat of over 35 degree Celsius.
According to a speech on the state’s standard Snapchat, up to 150ml of rain had shower parts of the capital, which is home to around 22 million people, in a 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday evening.
The downpours may” induce mountain torrents, mudslides, mudslides and other secondary catastrophe”, it said.
According to the speech, city officials have ordered the temporary closure of some holiday destinations and hill and river hostels out of security concerns.
Beijing residents were sent text messages urging them to cut down on outdoor exercise, stay away from plains or riverside locations, and take note of sites of refuge.
Officials in neighbouring Hebei state, which surrounds Beijing and is home to more than 70 million people, even warned of flooding, state news agency Xinhua said.
