
The Elections Department announced on May 19 that Mr. Andre Low and Ms. Eileen Chong from the Workers ‘ Party ( WP ) would take the two Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP ) seats in Singapore’s 15th parliament.
Ms. Chong was a member of the WP’s five-member staff in Tampines GRC while Mr. Low contested in Jalan Kayu SMC.
The appointed opposition candidates ‘ individuals, including Mr. Low, received the highest percentage of votes, while the WP individuals who ran in the Tampines GRC received the second-highest percent.
The Elections Department stated in a press release that the Returning Officer requested that the team choose a candidate for the Tampines GRC on May 9, 2025, and that they would choose one of them as the candidate for NCMP.
On Sunday, the party informed the Returning Officer of their choice to select Ms. Chong.
If the number of elected opposition candidates falls short of a predetermined amount, NCMP tickets are usually offered to the best-performing losing criticism individuals.
The maximum amount of opposition MPs in parliament increased from nine to twelve as a result of alterations to the NCMP system in 2016. Additionally, the shift grants NCMPs the equal right to vote as elected MPs.
Two chairs became available for NCMPs after the WP successfully defended its 10 political votes, notably the five-member Aljunied GRC, four-member Sengkang GRC, and single-seat district Hougang.
With 48.53 percent of the ballot, Mr. Low, a 34-year-old WP stranger, lost to labour key Ng Chee Meng, 56.
The WP’s staff in Tampines won 47.37 percent of the fight, falling to the PAP in a four-cornered match.
Four beginners made up the team, which included Ms Chong, 33, Mr. Jimmy Tan, 53, Dr. Ong Lue Ping, 48,  , and Mr. Thng, 37, led by WP vice-chair Faisal Manap, 49.
