
In southwest China, strong winds slammed four visitor boats to sink, killing at least nine people and injuring 70.
84 people fell into the water in Guizhou’s Qianxi area on Sunday as a result of sudden strong gusts, according to state media reports. More than a hundred people were reported missing, but all but one have since been found.
China celebrated the tails end of its week-long May Day holiday, which is a major vacation time, as the incident occurred.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had previously urged “all-out work” in the search and rescue.
President Xi pointed out that other similar incidents have lately occurred and stressed the need for enhancing safety measures, according to state media.
Local officials have also been instructed to increase public safety precautions during the peak holiday season.
The incident on Sunday comes just two months after eleven people were killed in a second accident, when a customer vessel struck an commercial vessel in Hunan province, China.
