New Zealand calls for Kiwi pilot to be freed a year after Papua kidnapping

Since 2018, the Indonesian conflict has gotten much worse, with pro-independence fighters mounting stronger and more regular attacks, mainly because they have been able to acquire more advanced weapons.

The foreign minister of New Zealand stated that a number of government organizations continued to collaborate closely with their Indian counterparts to secure Mehrtens ‘ release.

The Indonesian government has recently stated that negotiations with catholic and community leaders to open the pilot have been given priority, noting the risks associated with conducting a military operation in the remote northern region.

Sebby Sambom, a spokesperson for the TPNPB, joined the call for Mehrtens ‘ discharge and stated that although the very factionalized rebel group has never gained independence by kidnapping someone.

The separatist group has repeatedly released videos of Mehrtens pleading with the UN to mediate negotiations for Papua’s democracy. He was seen in one of the video surrounded by Papuan fighters while waving the Morning Star flag, which was outlawed.
