Myanmar military intensifies civilian killings and arrests, says UN report

A UN report on Tuesday ( Sep 17 ) revealed that Myanmar’s military government has increased killings and arrests in an ostensible effort to silence opponents and recruit soldiers in the escalating conflict. After absolving Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected civilian authorities and stoking its violent defeat, the defense took control of the country in February 2021.

Since then, the rally activity has expanded into an expanding armed rebellion, and fighting has broken out on numerous sides, causing authorities to impose recruitment in February.

Since authorities have been denied admittance, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk reported that since the coup, 5, 350 citizens have been killed by the defense. The report was based primarily on rural conversations with lots of victims and witnesses.

2, 414 of those died between April 2023 and June 2024, with thousands of others being killed by strikes and artillery problems, an increase of 50 % over the preceding reporting time.

A spokeswoman for the Myanmar junta did not respond to requests for comment.

The document also revealed the volume of suspensions across the nation, with almost 27,400 people detained since the coup, out of which more than 9, 000 were in the most recent time. Many are thought to be in military training facilities, it said.
