The military has struggled to control the nation and fight off a revolution that was rooted in a youth-led revolt that the army brutally suppressed after overthrowing the civil authorities of Nobel prize Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021.
The election did take place either in December this year or January 2026, according to Min Aung Hlaing, giving a timeline for the first time during a visit to Belarus. A whole on-ground survey was carried out in just 145 of Myanmar’s 330 townships last year as part of arrangements for the release of a voting list, according to the junta.
According to the report, 53 organizations have agreed to run in the vote. The military government’s opponents have threatened to destroy the election and have asked different nations to abstain from accepting the results, asserting that the vote will be held against the people’s will.
Min Aung Hlaing urged rebels to abandon their military strategy and follow democratic solutions through dialogue, claiming that the army was engaged in a” just war” against rebels determined to destroy the nation.
Some researchers believe that the ballot-holding could lead to yet more hostilities, and Myanmar’s ASEAN neighbors have warned the junta to prioritize peace over elections. More than three million people have been forced to flee Myanmar as a result of fighting, with over a third of the population in need of humanitarian aid and common food insecurity, according to the UN.  ,
