Motorbike-sized tuna sold to Tokyo sushi restaurateurs for $1.3m

The Japanese sushi restaurants in Tokyo claim to have paid 207 million yen ($ 1.3 million,$ 1 million ) for a bluefin tuna that is about the same size and weight as a motorcycle.

The Toyosu Fish Market’s annual new year’s bidding in the Japanese capital has the second-highest bid previously ever received.

Onodera Group, which had the winning pay, said the fish- which weighs in at 276kg (608lb )- may be served at its Michelin-starred Ginza Onodera cafes, as well as Nadaman cafes across the country.

After the bidding, Onodera official Shinji Nagao told investigators,” The first fish is something that is meant to bring in good fortune,” according to AFP news agency.

Mr. Nagao continued,” Have a great year!,” and that he hoped people would feed the fish that had been caught off the Aomori area in north Japan.

For the past five decades, the team has consistently received the highest bidder for the Ichiban Tuna.

Last month, it forked out 114m japanese for the best fish.

The highest bid price since similar data began in 1999 was 333.6m japanese in 2019 for a 278kg bluefin.

It was paid by self-styled Japanese “Tuna King” and sushi restaurant owner Kiyoshi Kimura.

Toyosu seafood market, which opened in 1935, claims to be the biggest seafood market in the world, and is known for pre-dawn regular fish transactions.

However, Hokkaido sea urchins even sold for a record-breaking 7 million yen, according to the Japan Times, making fish one of the other items on offer on Sunday.
