More students will be allowed to take up Higher Mother Tongue in secondary 1 from 2026

Despite of their total PSLE report, individuals who do well in their mother tongue will have the opportunity to study Higher Mother mouth at Secondary 1 from 2026.

Now, students may receive either a PSLE total score of 8 or better. Additionally, they are eligible if they receive an overall score of 9 to 14 and a Mother Tongue ( MTL ) score of AL1 or AL2 or at the very least a merit in the Higher Mother Tongue ( HMTL ).

But from 2026, they can take up Higher Mother Tongue&nbsp, as a subject in secondary school&nbsp, as long as they&nbsp, obtain AL1/AL2 in their Mother Tongue at the PSLE, or a distinction or merit in Higher Mother Tongue, said Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing on Saturday ( Sep 14 ).

” All of us have different strengths and abilities. Some individuals may be solid in language but not in another topics”, he said.

” We will help more of these students enroll in Higher Mother Tongue so they can understand the MTL at the highest degree they you.”

At the Mother Tongue Languages Symposium 2024, Mr. Chan made a list of activities to promote language in the educational program and to support individuals ‘ learning and using their mother tongue as a living speech.

” Language is a core of our education program and continues to stand as a fundamental foundation of our national identity as a society composed of various cultural and language communities,” he said.

” Propagating language will enhance our cultural fabric.”
