More red-amber-green arrows to be installed, reducing discretionary right-turn junctions to under 15%

With a high-profile incident in Tampines last month that left two people dead, including a teen girl, the topic of conversation among MPs has been road safety.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said on Tuesday that it will not be lowering the fines for unsafe driving at this time in response to questions from numerous MPs.

Unfortunately, LTA will continue to evaluate, develop and implement programs to improve road safety.

MOTORCYCLE LANES” NOT FEASIBLE”

In light of the continuing rise in motorcycle-related casualties on these roads, MP Murali Pillai ( PAP- Bali Batok ) also suggested building bicycle lanes on the expressway.

A 26-year-old motorcyclist was killed last month in an accident involving a lorry along the Pan Island Expressway ( PIE), and a motorcyclist died in a car accident involving a man with schizophrenia who jumped out of a minibus along the East Coast Parkway (ECP ) in November 2023.

The most vulnerable groups of road people, according to the police’s statement from February, are older and drivers, and they continue to be responsible for a sizable proportion of traffic injuries that result in fatal injuries.

Riders or scooter users were involved in 53.5 percent of all traffic incidents and accounted for half of all traffic fatalities, they continued, adding that despite just making up 14.4 % of the entire car people.

” Compared to 2022, the number of dangerous accidents in 2023 involving drivers and older pedestrians increased by 44.0 per share and 13.0 per share respectively”, the authorities said.

Mr. Chee said LTA has implemented engineering measures to enhance the health of motorcyclists and scooter riders in response to Mr. Murali’s problem.

These include the construction of motorcycle weather shelters below flyovers, the installation of wider, more important lane markings, and the use of more skid proof road surfaces.

However, he claimed that because many expressway sections are bridges, flyovers, and tunnels, adding that it is” not feasible” to construct additional bicycle lanes on expressways due to the area restrictions.

Mr. Chee continued to work on different initiatives and measures to improve road safety and that the state is still committed to enhancing the security of motorists as well as other road users.

” The LTA, Traffic Police ( TP), and the Singapore Road Safety Council ( SRSC ) have various outreach activities to engage key stakeholder groups annually”, he said.

” This includes motorists practicing safe driving habits, Singapore Road Safety Month, and the Singapore Ride Safe Campaign,” according to the statement.
