Mumbai: On Monday ( Jul 8 ), heavy rains flooded roads and railroads in India’s financial capital, causing delays to some flights and closing some colleges, while overflowing rivers elsewhere impacted more than 2 million people.
More than 300mm of rain fell on the town of 12 million over the course of six hours until 7 a.m., according to provincial officials, with more heavy showers forecasting the following day.
As visitors piled up on the state’s Eastern and Western Express bridges, travellers waded through knee-deep waters that half submerged automobiles in many areas.
According to them, water on the tracks forced railroad authorities to halt some long-distance trains, while television images showed some residential passenger trains, which are essential to the lives of millions of people, halted on saturated lines.
More than 250 flights were delayed and at least 30 cancelled at the city’s aircraft, the site of tracking services Flightradar24 showed.
